The E72 home screen consists of 2 types of shortcuts:

• Applications shortcuts - 6 shortcuts for running application straight from the home screen.
• Home screen applications - Interactive application that provide information on the home screen.

Application Shortcuts

Menu-> Ctrl. panel-> Settings->General-> Personalization ->Standby mode-> Mode settings-> Application Shortcuts.

Here you can enable/disable the applications shortcuts or replacing the applications.

It’s also possible to use web site address as application shortcut.

Home Screen Applications

Menu-> Ctrl. panel-> Settings->General-> Personalization ->Standby mode-> Mode settings-> Home Screen Applications

Select the application you would like to have on the Home screen.

Some important applications:

Message Notification – Display notification at bottom of the screen only when new SMS/MMS message is waiting.

Missing Call Notification – Displays notification at bottom of the screen only when you have missing call

Calendar –  Display upcoming meetings from the calendar

Music Player - Display music player control when the musing player is being used.

Email home screen plugin should be configured from different menu :

Menu-> Ctrl. panel-> Settings->General-> Email -> Global settings -> Home Screen . It supports to email accounts: Primary and Secondary (Left, Right keys to switch between them).

Mailbox – Select which mailbox account to display. you need to have mail account configured.

For those who asked how to use the feature, first of all make sure that the feature is enabled.

Menu-> Ctrl. panel-> Settings ->General -> Sensors-> Turning Control. Make sure that Silence Calls and Snoozing alarms are marked.

When the phone starts to ring on incoming call, flip the phone face down and wait few seconds. it takes some times until the phone’s ringer turns to silence mode.

The feature can also be used the same way when using alarm and you would like to snooze.

The Nokia E72 has the Quickoffice 6 pre-installed. Using this application you can open and edit word, excel and power point documents. Few years ago (I’m not sure when) Quickoffice decided to provide free upgrade to Quickoffice premier (6.2) to some of Nokia models. Nokia E72 is one of them.

This upgrade is quite important since the new version supports office 2007 documents which became very popular this days.
For some reason it was not possible to upgrade to this version in the Nokia E72. In the Nokia E71 it worked without any problem from day one.
Today I opened the application and the upgraded the application successfully.
follow this steps to upgrade the application:
(Menu->Office-> Quickoffice) and choose options, “Updates and upgrade”.
Select the upgrade and fill in the form, the email address is important. I tried to download the application directly but it got stock.
But this time I got also an email with a link for downloading the application.
Download the application from the link in the email and run the installation.

By default following destinations exist: Access Point, Internet, Multimedia msg., WAP services, Intranet, Uncategorized. New connections are added by default  to the Uncategorized destination.

You might ask what the point of using this other then having the network connections organized?

Some of the applications network configuration works only with netowrk destination, it’s not possible to select specific connection. Nokia email’s client and Nokia’s internet browser are using this type of configuration. When adding new configuration pay attention to categorize it under the right destination so you’ll be able to use the application.

Here what you can do with the data cable:

Charge the battery – It’s nice upgrade from the E71, the data cable also charges the battery.

Once the cable connected following option menu appears:

PC Suite – When selecting this option from the phone menu, you can use the new OVI software to backup the phone contacts, SMS, pictures, install new maps and application. if you didn’t install the application you can download it from here. Although bluetooth supported as well, physical cable always works better. Additionally most if not all firmware updates supported only when connecting using a cable.

Media Transfer – When selecting this option you can use the windows media player to sync pictures, music and videos. I tried it but didn’t like it.

Picture Transfer - When selecting this option you will be able to transfer pictures from the E72 like it was a camera. you an use your favorite picture mangment software, picasa for instance to import the pictures.

Media Storage- forgot your USB stick? no worries select this option and the E72 will act as a disk on key.

Connect PC to the Web – If you have 3G data plane you can use this option to connect you laptop or PC to the internet. you will need the “Nokia PC Internet Access” to use it. But no worries if the software is not installed on the laptop/PC you can install it when connecting the cable for the first time.

The default behavior can be changed to suite your needs, go to Menu-> Ctrl. Panel-> Settings-> Connectivity-> USB. USB mode –  Default behavior when connecting the cable. Ask on connection – if changed to NO the option menu will not appear when connecting the cable.

Nokia E72′s default folder structure can be tricky and inconvenient some times. All new applications are being installed under Applications folder. After few installation it’s hard to find the application you are looking for.

It’s possible to rearrange folders, rename them and move applications.

Click on the “Menu” button and use following methods to keep your applications area tight and clean:

- Creating new folder -Why not keep all applications that related to community under the same f0lder? Click on the Options (Left softkey) and then New Folder. You will be asked to give a name to the new folder.

- Moving applications between folders - We created new  “Community” folder (or any other folder for that matter) and we would like to move application to this folder. Select the application that you would like to move, Options and then Move To Folder. A list of folders will be displayed, select folder and click Move.

- Renaming Folder Name - Changing the folder name is also is an easy task, Select the folder, Options and then Rename.

- Moving Application Location - Applications are displayed in the order they were installed, not very intuitive. if you would like to relocate the application within the folder, select the application, Options and then Move. use the cursor to mark the new location and confirm.

- Removing Application – To remove application that your are no longer need is done by selecting the application, click on Options and then Remove. It can be done also by selecting the application and click on the clear button.

Notes:

- It’s not possible to move folders.

- It’s not possible to rename applications name

• When typing address in the browser you can select one of the following suffixes from popup list: com, org or net. Just type the address and then when typing the period you’ll get the list  of suffixes. it’s also possible to edit  this list to add new suffixes.  Options->Settings-> General-> Web address suffix
• The browser support following keypad shortcuts:

1. Toolbar – Toolbar with several options.
2. Text Search – Ability to search text within the page.
3. Back one Page
4. Save as Bookmark – Save current page as bookmark.
5. Display diagram of this shortcuts
6. Reload the page
7. Full Screen display
8. Page overview- Zoom out to display all page.
9. Type URL address

• Another option to display the toolbar is by clicking on blank spot on the page.

• You can customize the keypad shortcuts and also the toolbar to fit your needs:

• When moving the cursor in a page, small picture of the all page displayed, it’s called mini map. Some people find this feature annoying. To disable the feature:  Options->Settings->General ->Mini map-> Off.
• The browser supports multiple windows. When multiple windows open you can see on the top right the window number. It’s possible to move between windows using the menu or to assign it as keypad shortcut or toolbar shortcut.
