Following Nokia’s official press release for the E72

Espoo, Finland – Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today. Nokia’s latest full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal device for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.

Building on the formula from the hugely successful Nokia E71, Nokia’s best selling QWERTY device to date, this latest arrival in Nokia’s Eseries family maintains essential elements of its predecessor, whilst still improving its capabilities in a number of areas. “Despite the outstanding market performance of the Nokia E71, we still continually look for ways to enhance the device,” said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. “So we included the desktop like email experience from the Nokia E75 and gave it a new optical navigation key for more intuitive scrolling through menus, emails and fast panning of images. We also upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels and added a standard 3.5 mm audio jack.”

On top of these developments, for the first time, owners will be able to set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen. In just a few steps, device owners will be able to connect to their favorite IM accounts such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi, amongst many others.

These new IM features are complimented by Nokia’s range of email solutions with a lifetime license for Nokia’s mobile email and IM service, Nokia Messaging, as well as onboard clients for Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler. Accessing popular accounts such as Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Ovi Mail and thousands of other email service providers is simple through improved on-device email setup, with the same easy to use UI integrating all of the owner’s corporate email accounts as well.

Performance improvements are evident throughout the user experience including faster Internet up- and downlink speeds. Other notable features which should make the Nokia E72 as popular as recent Nokia Eseries introductions include A-GPS and compass with integrated Maps, including lifetime walk and 10 days of turn-by-turn navigation if activated within the first three months. Conversations are also clearer with active noise cancellation, and a torch can be activated with a single press of the spacebar key. The office capabilities have been updated with a new version of Quickoffice, which delivers Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility as well as free version upgrades when new features become available.

The Nokia E72 is expected to begin shipping late in the third quarter of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 350 before taxes and subsidies.

Following summary of key issues:

Design and Physical dimensions – Very similar to the E71. A little bit wider and 1 gram heavier. The rubber cover of the USB and memory card was replaced with plastic cover, the red power button replaced with silver button which fits the phone better.
Display – Same as the E71, QVGA 320×240 pixels.
Keyboard and Joystick – Keyboard very similar to the E63. The optical joystick works fine and smooth although sometimes you might accidentally click or scroll.
Voice – The voice quality of the speaker is better. Connector 3.5mm instead of the non standard 2.5mm connector of the E71
Battery – Although same battery is being used, the power consumption is 15%-20% better.
Memory - 128 Mb of memory works very good when browsing the internet and several applications running. The E72 recognize 32GB MicroSD memory card.
CPU – E72 consists of 600Mhz instead of 369 Mhz in the E71, provides faster response and support more colorful interface.
Communications – Support of UPnP wase added, WIFI is just the same. The infrared port was removed.
Camera- The 5 mega pixel camera provides better pictures, no detailed information about this issue.
GPS – Digital compass added which provides the positioning of the map according to direction of the phone.

My impression of the post is that although the E72 is better the the E72, it has only some improvements and not a completely new phone.

Nokia E72 Hardware Versions

Before purchasing E72 take a moment to learn about available E72 hardware versions and which version fits your home network.

The E72 supports actually two network types, GSM and UMTS. GSM networks also known as 2.x generation operates in 4 different frequencies worldwide: 850, 900, 1800, and 1900. All E72 hardware versions support all 4 networks. It means that in any GSM network you’ll be able to do basic phone calls, SMS and maybe browsing the internet in slowly.

UMTS networks known also as 3.x generation provides fast internet connectivity and additional services such as video conversation. UMTS networks supports one or two of the following frequencies: 850, 900, 1900 and 2100.

E72 has 3 hardware version to support UMTS networks worldwide:

E72-1 Support – 900/2100
E72-2 Support – 850/1900
E72-3 Support -850/2100

Buying version that does not fit your home network wont allow you to use high speed internet or in some networks which are based only on UMTS, connecting to the network at all.

E72 version appears on the box sticker, under the battery or by typing *#0000# (Fourth line)

Physical Dimensions

The E72 weight is 128 grams, only 1 gram heavier then the E72.

It’s also 2.5 mm wider , 114 x 59.5 x 10.1 mm

Operating System

E71 was released with S60 3rd edition, the E72 will be running S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (FP2)

Headphone Jack

Nokia replaced the E71 2.5 mm non standard connector to the standard 3.5 mm headphone jack in the E72

Navigation Key

The E71 navigation key replaced int the E72 to Opti Navi. The Opti Navi is improved navigation key which is based on optical recognition of the finger.

Keyboard

Both E72 and E71 equipped with full QWERTY keyboard. Nokia decided to adopt the E63 keyboard for the E72. The space bar is smaller, I wonder if it’s comfortable to type with such small space bar.
